COST-BASED OPTIMIZER explained:
A program that works out the best access path for queries on database data.
The cost-based optimizer is part of the database management system. Its function is to reduce the time required to access database data, thereby reducing cost. The update statistics function, which can be performed from the Computing Center Management System in the SAP System,makes sure that the statistics required by the optimizer are up-to-date. Without up-to-date statistics, the access path generated by the optimizer may not be the best available.
